#HowSocialMediaCanMakeYouRidiculous + Video
Oh Twitter! Oh Instagram! Oh Facebook! You wonderful threesome of most used social platforms in the world! Yes, we (the world) love you except maybe, sometimes we don’t. #Whatdoyoumean?
The magnificent, creative and exponentially growing use of the Hashtag is a phenomenon that we all have witnessed fall into the ridiculous pile. This isn’t the hashtag’s fault of course, but the fault of the users. Just see how Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon portray the hashtags in real life conversation!
Now the real purpose of a hashtag is to create a common subject for whatever thing it is you’re posting on social media so it can fall into a category. Say I’m at a Beyoncé concert, I would tweet or upload a picture with “#BeyoncéConcert”. People who would search this topic on Twitter or Instagram would instantly find all information and media related to Beyonce’s concert. The purpose is the creation of content that can be easily found and shared.
Twitter does a pretty good job at this with the trends section, but ever since Instagram popped up, the whole thing got blown out of proportion! I’m not even gonna get into it because I know you all know have witnessed the 10+ hashtags on a curated picture of someones cat.
I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that this prolific amount of nonsensical hashtags are saturating the creation of coherent and relevant content. Who in the world would search #thisishowirolll or #lol #lmfao #onmywaytofuneral.
So, I must thank Justin and Jimmy for making this video. This is how all of you abusive hashtag users would sound in real life. Only two days released and it has over 7 million views, so by now I hope that someone somewhere has learned a lesson.
